People’s egos are what’s wrong with the world!
by Heidi on March 4, 2009 in Brain Dump with 1 Comment
You know why there’s an ever decreasing number of people out there, doing random good deeds? Sure, it’s partly because people are becoming increasingly more selfish… but it’s also because people take themselves way too seriously!
Example: Have you ever watched an over-burdened, distracted mother lose track of their child and have them wander off towards a road? What would you do? Stay out of it, after all it’s not your business? Or, rush forward and attempt to save her child from getting hurt or worse?
For me there’s only one answer. I would stick my big nose in where it doesn’t necessarily belong, and help her out. The sad thing is that on many similar occasions that I’ve been involved in, I’ve received nothing but a glare in response to my good deed. I can understand that people may feel ashamed or embarrassed (depending on the situation), but how hard can it be to say a simple “thank you”.
Still, I am a firm believer that every good deed makes a difference and I will continue to do them.
Every now and then I come across someone who surprises me and is very appreciative, and it makes the effort all worthwhile.
Example: A couple of weeks ago I was trudging up the hill to work and there was a chick in her early 20s walking down in the opposite direction. She was wearing one of those tragic 80′s outfits which included very tight black stonewashed jeans. As I was busy having an internal rant about how she definitely should not be wearing those jeans, I happened to notice that her fly was completely down. Instinctually I reached out to touch her arm and get her attention as she walked by. As she turned to me I quietly let her know that she was “flying low”. I braced myself for an awkward look, a grimace and a brushoff… but instead she looked me in the eye, smiled and said “thank you so much”
She totally made my day
Love can’t be voted away

What the hell is going on!? It seems that in addition to the completely hideous resurgence of everything 1980s, straight girls holding hands has also been added to the list of trends.
Today as I sat waiting for a friend on Whitcoulls corner, I was subjected to a stream of the most appalling display of “fashion”. Some of the outfits were such a terrible hodge-podge of different colours, patterns and metals, that paired with carefully crafted “just been dragged through a bush backwards” hair styles, it was difficult to tell these fashion victims from the regular ‘crazies’ of Auckland’s streets.
Face it, 3/4 length leggings with gold zips with never look good!
Obviously I have no objection to women holding hands, but I do find it curious that there has been an apparent increase in the number of straight white women holding hands… with each other. Just today I saw 2 separate “couples”, fingers interlocked, walking casually along Auckland’s main streets.
What has caused this new found liberty?
When I’m not lazy…
by Heidi on February 19, 2009 in Brain Dump with No CommentsAbout 3 1/2 years ago I bought my first mountain bike, a Canondale Super V 500SL. Mat black with sunny yellow decals, it wasn’t the most elegant of bikes and it did suit the name “Giraffe”, but it served me well for a while.
My current bike is a Specialized Epic Comp in dark metalic grey. I love it as much as I love my cat… which means I neglected more than I should. I suffer from chronic laziness, which makes it very hard for me to get out and do stuff… even the things I really love doing.
I was recommended this great online comic strip today, and found this gem in the archive.
